Since our first rehearsal on January 10th 2002 we have established a choir of approximately 50 voices. Membership is open to all irrespective of age. New members are welcome to join us at any rehearsal with no audition initially required. We particularly wish to encourage and develop younger singers. Some have already distinguished themselves as soloists within The Silurian Choir and within their own school and university choirs. This support is given by actively helping and encouraging them at rehearsals and by waiving subscriptions and vocal score hire charges whilst they are still studying in full time education.
Our programme runs throughout the year with a 2 month break during July and August. Not everyone is able to commit to this due to personal circumstances. Provided we know at the start of each rehearsal session which members cannot join us for the forthcoming concert this can be accommodated. We do however find that the majority of our members enjoy singing during the summer months where our programme is more varied and 'lighter'.
It is the intention of our Music Planning Committee, when choosing a programme for each year, to ensure that our singers enjoy a healthy balance between well known and well loved works and less familiar works which may present different challenges to both amateur and semi professional members! We also aim to cover a variety of musical styles from the early baroque through until the present day. The choir has had many well received performances including more recently those of Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Nelson Mass and Mass of Time and War, Schubert's Magnificat and Mass in G, as well as the Christmas and Summer concerts.
We are fortunate to include amongst our members several singers of genuine soloist calibre. All members who feel that they have the ability to perform in a soloist capacity are invited to express an interest should they wish to be considered for such opportunities.
The interests of our choir members are looked after by the elected Voice Representatives who sit on the Executive Committee.
Choir rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings, from 7:30 - 9:15pm, in Tewkesbury Methodist Church (the "Church on the Cross"). Ample car parking (floods permitting!) is available in a public car park at the rear of the church. New members are always welcome, please refer to the Contact page on this web site if you have any queries or would like further information.
Members of the Choir
Six years ago, I was looking to join a choir which performed more than a couple of concerts a year and offered members the opportunity to sing solo parts, if interested. The Silurian Choir fitted the bill perfectly. The Choir is friendly and new members are always given a warm welcome. I am so glad I joined!
Singing in a choir is one of the most rewarding and uplifting activities for a musician. Choral concerts with orchestra are always a highlight especially in such venues as Pershore Abbey
Being a Musical Director within the choir allows me the enjoyment and creativity of making music not just with the choral group but also with orchestral players in a particularly intimate and friendly setting. As a relatively small group the choir allows me to explore musical works that might not normally get performed during the course of a season with a larger choral groups.
